An American sculptor, known for her monumental and portrait work, Finke began making medals recently, attracted by ‘the opportunity to make a specific statement, which can’t be done in large works’ and the fact that ‘relief sculpture is close to drawing which I love’. The medal reflects the impact on the artist of Woolf’s Winter Diary, where she talks of the joys and tribulations of work in progress, and also of the book named in the title. Finke wrote: ‘When I finally acquired “a room of my own” my work flourished. A lesson that has to be learned early on’.
