Helder Batista (b. 1932) is a distinguished sculptor and one of Portugal’s leading medallists. A professor at Lisbon’s School of Fine Arts, he has exhibited at FIDEM exhibitions since 1979, and has won many awards, including the American Numismatic Society’s Sanford Saltus medal (in 1998) and the FIDEM grand prize, which he received in Colorado Springs in 2007. His public art and his smaller pieces all demonstrate his continuing search for innovation. Volume and form are important aspects of his work, and drawing is for him an essential tool. His medals are both intimate and powerful. The witty and innovative Eve and Adam medal was created specifically for BAMS.
