Sophie Dickens (b.1966) studied the history of art at the Courtauld Institute, London, later gaining practical sculptural skills at the John Cass in Whitechapel (now Metropolitan School of Art). Her knowledge of anatomy, from assiduous life drawing and study at the Department of Anatomy at University College, London, is reflected in her figurative work. In 2007 she won ‘The Sculpture Prize at the Victoria and Albert Museum – Inspired by the Human Form – The Founders’ Award.’ She exhibits internationally. Dickens’s BAMS medal is concerned with freedom of speech and cultural freedom. The artist writes: ‘The hand holding a pen, and sword slashing through the back of the medal, are inspired by an Islamic hadith, or unverified spoken report, relating to the words of the Prophet Muhammad.’
