This work by the sculptor and medallist Rank-Broadley bears witness to the artist’s commitment to the figure in sculpture. On his medal the unfettered athlete is contrasted with the ‘chained crouched figure in despair’, a symbol not only of man’s inhumanity to man but of ‘man cramped by his own lack of imagination and damned by his conscience’.
