Gemma Stevens is a young artist who studied at Loughborough University School of Art and Design from 2006 to 2009. Her medal New Home? won the Thomas Fattorini Ltd prize in the 2008 BAMS Student Medal Project for its excellent use of the medallic medium. The medal is now being issued by BAMS. The artist writes: ‘My medal represents two different sides of life, a life with nothing and a life with everything. I looked at how money has an effect on people everywhere. On one side I have chosen to show a cardboard box, this representing a home for the homeless; on the other, a present wrapped up perfectly to show that in a life with money a box is merely a container for something expensive or important, a gift. I thought this was a good way to portray the differences in the world today: those who have, and those who have nothing. Money controls how and where you live and it separates us, one from another, now and in the future. I wanted to portray this in my medal.’
