Judy McCaig was born in Scotland in 1957, and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and at the Royal College of Art, London. She has since acted as visiting lecturer at Edinburgh and Glasgow Schools of Art, Farnham College of Art and Massana School of Art, Barcelona. As a jeweller and print-maker, she has exhibited widely in Europe, America and Japan. Her work is represented in the collections of the Scottish Crafts Council, the Crafts Council and the National Museums of Scotland. Since 1991 she has lived in Spain. About her medal for BAMS, Guided by unknown instincts, the artist writes: ‘The medal, talisman, amulet or “lost relic” features a landscape of beast, flora and flying creatures – our guardian spirits guiding us on our continuous quest through the past, symbolised on the reverse as “coming from” a history long lost and forgotten – and the present shown on the obverse of the medal as an onward journey, a journey of hope, new discoveries, progression and optimism for the future.’
